We returned to Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Saturday last as we participated in the Go Games hurling blitz. All our players got to play three games on the 4G pitch and every one of them played very well, but most importantly they enjoyed the experience. The blitz has let our lads looking forward to returning to training next week. A big thank you to young whistlers Conor Fitzgerald and Dan Cagney for traveling on the day and for officiating several games.

Our hurling was cancelled this week due to the bad weather. Some of our lads were at the Rebel Og Easter Camp this week in Carrigtwohill.  There was a very good Magpie representation from the Fé 11’s, 12’s and 13’s. Training will resume this week.

Our footballers took to the road last Thursday evening to play our rescheduled match against Mallow. It was a case of dejavu for our lads for as soon as we arrived in Mallow the rain and wind increased dramatically.  It was strongly rumoured that Bear Grills was in attendance as he had heard about these young magpies exploits in Cobh a few week ago in similar horrendous conditions and wanted to see for himself if they really were that resilient. The match began with us playing against the gale force wind and driving rain, within two minutes the magpies scored a fantastic team goal finished brilliantly by Sean McSharry. The hosts
responded immediately with a couple of excellent long range points. With Cathraigh Cronin and Eoghan Fraser working very hard at mid field the magpies still poured forward in search of scores forcing the Mallow defence to commit several fouls which was punished by some excellent frees from Odhran Dennigan. Mallow struck back with an unstoppable gaol we responded with an excellent team point finished off by Peter Barrett but just on the stroke of half time Mallow cracked in another rocket.  At half time we introduced five fresh and eager players but we found it more difficult to play with the wind, after a dubious free Mallow struck another gaol but credit to our lads who kept battling as we pushed forward in search of scores they pounced for two break away goals, we managed two more well taken points but we couldn’t breach the strong Mallow defence to get the all important goals we needed. The match ended on a score line of Mallow 5.05 v Midleton 1.05,  the score line did not do justice to our lads efforts and quality on the night but fair play to both teams for performing the a very high level in very challenging conditions.
Panel: Ben Fitzpatrick, Callum Mc Sweeney,  Callum O Brien, Carthaigh Cronin, Conor Williams,  Daniel Garde, Daniel Shine, Eoghan Fraser, Fionn Kelly, Gearoid Cashman, Jack Foley,  James Mc Sweeney, John Paul Mc Manus,  Mathew Gregory, Odhran Dennigan,  Paddy Walsh,  Peter Barrett, Sean McSharry, Thomas Dunlea & Yohanis Mehigan.

On Wednesday evening the magpies had a home football game against Na Piarsaigh. There was a strong breeze and we opted to play with the wind in the first half and they used it to their advantage with Darragh Fitzgerald and Darragh Aherne scoring two quick goals. This was followed up with two points from Cian Lambe. Evan Mc Grath was then fouled in the square resulting in Cian Lambe slotting home the penalty. We seemed to take their eye off the ball letting Na Piarsaigh in for two soft goals. The home side responded with two points from Darragh Fitzgerald leaving us in a healthy position at half time leading 3-5 to 2-0. They came out fighting in the second half and within three minutes of the start they had kicked three goals. We had some near misses with Tiernan O Connell and Cormac Ryan unlucky not to find the back of the net on two occasions. The wind proved a huge factor in the game with Na Piarsaigh winning well in the end on a score line of 7-03 to 3-05. The lads put in a great effort and the mentors would like to thank all parents and supporters on the night.
Panel: Alex Howard, Oisin Berdassa, Darragh Scanlon, Sean Cronin, Oscar Brennan, Tadhg O Leary Hayes, Thomas O Connor, Tadhg Bohane, Evan Mc Grath, Cian Lambe, Darragh Fitzgerald, Liam O Neill, Darragh Aherne, Cormac Ryan, Andrew Burke, Samuel Morrissey Darragh Higgins, Paul Connolly & Tiernan O Connell.

On Thursday last we welcomed Seandun to Midleton for our final challenge game before the commencement of the Premier 1 League. The game was played in 3 x 20 minute periods. Seandun played with the aid of a very strong breeze in the first period and punished us with some well taken scores to lead 2-7 to 0-2. In the next period we started to dominate and put up some great scores. We did hit a few wides which would prove costly. At the end of the second period we trailed 2-9 to 2-7. In the third period the subs benches were emptied, points went back and forth but Seandun found the net again to see out the game on a full time score of 3-13 to 2-11.
Team: Nicky Hayes, Will O'Sullivan, Ciarmhac Smyth, Evan McCarthy, Gavin Reddy, Charlie Walsh, Luke Deane, Alex Quirke(0-2), Patrick Kane, Darragh McCarthy, Darragh Crowley(0-4, 3f), Dan Cagney(1-0), Conor Fitzgerald(1-3), Ryan Cahill & Paul Connaughton(0-1).
Subs: Leo Hennessy (0-1), James Condon & Trevor Shine.
After a few challenge games against Knockavilla Kickhams(Tipp), Imokilly, Seandun and the fe15's we now move on to the league campaign. These were very useful work outs which benefited both players and coaches. In the Premier 1 Hurling Championship we have been drawn against Blackrock. Date, time and venue to be confirmed but it is provisionally fixed for the 30th of April.
Fixtures: Monday 9th April Premier 1 Hurling League v Sarsfields venue TBC at 7pm
Tuesday 10th April East A Hurling League: Midleton v Erins Own in Caherlag at 6pm.
