Midleton Hurling & Football, Ladies Football & Camogie Club NEWS

25 February, 2018

Senior Hurling League
We began our League campaign last Sunday morning with a very good victory over our hosts Erins Own at Caherlag. Having led at the break by 0-11 to 0-06 we held the upper hand for the second half and ran out deserving winners by 0-20 to 0-15.
Team: Tommy Wallis, Elliot Mulcahy, Alywin Kearney, Seanaidh Smyth , Padraig O Keeffe (0-01), Eoin Moloney, Padraig O Farrell, Paul Haughney (0-03), Cormac Walsh (0-02), Aidan Ryan (0-01), Sean O Meara (0-02), Ian Kennefick (0-01), Cormac Beausang (0-06 ), Luke O Farrell (0-02) & Patrick White (0-01).
Subs used Seamus O Farrell, Padraig Nagle, Tommy O Connell & Jake Hegarty (0-01).
Referee Ger Scully (Killeagh).

Fe21 Football
Last Saturday afternoon we started off this years East Cork Championship campaign with a well deserved win against a physical St Colmans in Shanagarry. It took us until the end of the first quarter to get into our stride but when we did we put together some fluid passages of play to haul back a lead that St Colmans had opened up, thanks in part to a Pàdraig O Briain goal. Halftime score was St Colmans 1-05 v Midleton 1-04.
In the second half we really picked up the pace and we opened up their defence with great inter passing and lung bursting runs from Tommy O Connell, Seanaidh Smyth, Adam Daly and the Finn brothers helping to open up a lead . Our defence was resilient for most of the half but St Colmans goals kept them in it. Ronan Lynch sprang from the bench to finish Messi like to put us ahead. However with some poor execution in front of goal and the concession of a questionable penalty in inquiry time St Colmans managed to tie up matters at full time. The boys regrouped before the start of extra time and took the game by the scruff of the neck every player putting their shoulder to the wheel and with Cormac Beausang and Cathal Gunning coming to the fore scoring the crucial scores to help get us over the line by 2-15 to 4-7. This was a very disciplined and workmanlike performance by all.
Team: Conor O’ Farrell, Cormac O Briain, Seanaidh Smyth, Conor Evans, Adam Daly, Seán O’ Meara, Eoin Mitchell, Eoin Moloney, Cormac Beausang, Cathal Gunning, Tommy O Connell, Shane Finn, Padraig O Briain, Harry Wall & Kevin Finn.
Subs used Mark Daly & Ronan Lynch.

Allianze Hurling League
Last Sunday before a crowd of over 10,000 the Cork senior hurlers were defeated by Waterford in Pairc Ui Chaoimh in Round 4 of the League by 1-20 to 1-15. Cork having lost the services of Seamus Harnedy to a red card and even though the drew level early in the second half Waterford were able to pull away at the end.
Conor Lehane scored two points before going off at half time.
Cork now face Tipperary in Thurles next Sunday where they have a chance to avoid a relegation play off.

1917 Cork County Senior ‘Runners Up’ medal.
Recently a Cork County Runners up medal 1917 was presented to Midleton GAA club by Mr. Noel O’Neill of Moycullen, Co. Galway. Mr. O’Neill wrote to the club earlier this
month as follows;
“I have a silver Cork Co. Hurling Championship Runners-up medal 1917 awarded to a Midleton player. It is engraved with the initials MK so was probably awarded to Michael Kearney who played on the winning team in the previous year. My father found this medal decades ago but failed to make contact with the club on a number of occasions, now that communications are better I 'm trying again. I would like to return the medal to your club or to a descendant of Mike Kearney. Let me know if you are interested.
Regards, Noel O Neill”
Contact was made with Noel O’Neill and the medal was returned to us recently. Noel’s father was a Garda Sergeant and he advised us that his father found the medal on O’Connell Street Dublin while on patrol. The inscription on the back of the medal reads;
 ‘Sen Hur C’ship 1917. Runners Up. Won by Midleton HC’
The initials M.K. are also professionally inscribed on the back of the medal.

Michael Kearney was one of the best players in the club during this glorious period of hurling success. In the 1911 census the Kearney’s resided at 1 Ballyedikin (Churchtown) Midleton. The family consisted of Michael (60), Mary (60), Eugene (29), Michael (20) and Richard (18) Michael Kearney senior was described as being a carpenter.
Michael Kearney lived an exciting and dangerous life during the troubles being heavily involved with the local IRA volunteers taking part in many ‘operations’ which he later described in great detail. In a deposition to Roinn Cosanta/The Bureau of Military History 1913-1921 Michael Kearney described himself as a Lieutenant in the Midleton Company 4th Battalion, Cork no.1 Brigade of the IRA. In this fascinating document detailing the activities of the time he outlined his early association with the Gaelic League and how he joined the National Volunteers (John Redmond’s) when a company was formed in Midleton in 1913.  After the troubles Michael Kearney joined the Army rising to the rank of Commandant residing in St. Patricks Hill, Cork.

Rebel Og Referee Workshop at Midleton GAA Club
On Monday February 26th Midleton GAA Club in conjunction with Rebel Og will host a Referee Workshop at the Club.  This referee Workshop is open to all clubs for mentors and young referees to attend.  The workshop will be facilitated by Shane Supple and Pa Beausang.  If a club does not have adequate number of young referees trained up, they will not be allowed to enter any teams in the go games program.  Referees have to be at least 15 to referee U7-U9 matches and 16+ to referee U10 and U11 matches.  It is compulsory that each club is represented at this meeting.  It is very important that clubs, mentors and parents are aware that the Go Games Program is a non competitive program.  There are no cups given out, there are not league tables to be topped, there is no county final.  Rebel Og look for results of matches, just so mismatches can be avoided and ensure all teams get meaningful, competitive games against other teams of equal ability.Times as follows;
Referee workshop (Fe15 & Fe16 players): 6.30pm
U7/8 mentors: 7.30pm - 8.30pm, U9/U10/U11 Mentors: 8.30 -9.00pm

Rebel Og Coaching Benchmarks 2020
On Saturday last in Pairc Ui Chaoimh Rebel Og Coaching held their 2017 Benchmarking Awards Conference. With over 105 clubs present on the day there was a large crowd of Coaching Officers and club coaches present. At shortly after 10am Jason Ryan ex manager of Wexford & Kildare was on hand to provide a practical demonstration involving the basic skills of football. Helping him out for this session was a young U14 football team from Mayfield, who were on the field and ready for action. With a wireless headset Jason while putting the lads through their paces was able to explain different techniques and drills to the large crowd of coaches in the stand overlooking the 4G pitch.
After approx 45 minutes Jason finished his practical demonstration and the rather grateful crowd were able to escape the cold breeze from the stands to the relative warmth of one of the main conference suites in the main stand where Dr Ed Coughlan from CIT gave a great presentation on skill acquisition for young players. This engaging presentation had everyone ready to head home and put his teaching to the test, but thankfully every one stayed on to watch ex Cork senior hurling manager, Kieran Kingston run one of the U16 development squads through their paces covering the defensive skills of hurling.
Again it was great for the coaches to see and hear Kieran (who was using a wireless headset microphone) as he ran the squads through various drills and exercises on the 4G pitch. It was great to be able to hear what he was trying to teach the young players on the field. We had a number of players involved in this session, Tim & Dan O’ Sullivan, Cian Crowley & Jack Fitzgerald.
This year Rebel Og had a huge increase in award winners across all three sections with Bronze Awards going to 32 clubs, Silver Awards to 25 clubs and Gold Awards to 28 clubs. Martin Mc Sweeney, Coaching Officer and Ruth Walsh Juvenile PRO were both in
attendance to attend the workshops and receive the Clubs Gold Award from Coaching Officer Ronan Dwane and Kevin O’ Callaghan Games Manager.
