Condolences
The Executive of the club would like to express their condolences to the family of the late Bill Walshe former owner of the Maple Leaf Bar who passed away recently. Bill's father was the great Bertie Walshe who was Midleton's goalkeeper on our great hurling team of 1914-17, a team which contested four county senior finals, winning two and were also winners of the Croke Cup in 1915 representing Cork.
His son Billy Walshe purchased the Maple Leaf Bar on the Main Street when he returned from the United States. Billy played with minor hurling with Castlemartyr and also played with the Cork team in New York when he emigrated there in the 1950’s. Many players from Ireland went to New York, legally and illegally, to play there during his tenure in America and he regarded Paddy Dowling from Castlemartyr as being the best player from this country to play in the Big Apple. Bill also recalls the many battles the GAA, at home and in New York, had with John ‘Kerry’ O Donnell who had control of the Gaelic Park in New York which was the home base for games in the city.

Bertie Walshe hailed from 13 Rock Street in Cloyne where his family had a family business. The 1911 census gave the following information Mary Walshe (58), James (26), David (22), Robert (20). Robert (Bertie) was described as a shopkeeper and farmer. Their house in Cloyne was sometimes used by IRA volunteers and at one stage had to battle their way out of the house when challenged by the Black and Tans. Bullet marks from that battle are still evident on surrounding buildings in Cloyne. Bertie was a star player on the Midleton and Cork teams at the time until he returned to his native Cloyne in 1920, where he played in goals for them. As well as his hurling, shop keeping and farming business, Bertie Walsh had a keen interest in horses which he bred.
We are grateful to Billy Walshe who presented one of his father's medals to the club in 1916 when he attended our centenary celebrations of our first senior county victory in 1916.

Midleton GAA 2nd Cul Camp of the Summer 2017
Tuesday the 8th of August marks our second camp of the summer and our first ever Cul Camp facilitating girls. The camp coordinator is Ingrid Connaughton.  The camp will run each day, Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 2.30pm. Many parents arrived to the Club Shop on Friday evening to collect the gear ahead of Tuesday’s camp start. For parents unable to attend Friday evening, your child’s gear will be available to collect on Tuesday morning. We currently have over 150 boys and girls booked into attend the camp.
Kindly ensure your child’s clothing and bag are clearly labelled.

We would like to remind parents that as we can experience all seasons in any given day to ensure you apply sun cream to the players before they arrive at the club and provide them with rain gear should the weather be unkind to us.  Please ensure that each player has a healthy packed lunch and sufficient drinks for the day.  The camp is open to all players from Fe6’s to Fe14’s across our Juvenile, Ladies Football & Camogie Clubs.  We have coaches and helpers arranged for each of the days to ensure plenty of coaching experience, supervision and fun is provided to all our participants. If parents are available and would be willing to help with the lunch time supervision and opening lunch boxes and drinks for our younger attendees please let Ingrid Connaughton know that morning if you can return to help on that given day.

In terms of dropping and collecting, please note for Health and Safety reasons the Club Gates will be closed.  Children attending the camp will need to be walked into the club grounds for a 10am start and collected from inside the Club gates at 2.30pm.  Please note that even if you have collected your child’s gear you will still need to sign them in on Tuesday morning for camp registration. Please note that bookings can also be taken on the morning of the camp.  The cost for a child attending a first camp is €60.00 (please note that as the 31st of July booking deadline has passed that gear can’t be guaranteed) and the cost for a second camp, without receiving the kit and bag is €35.00.
