U13 Hurling Premier 1

Midleton 3-08 Ballygarvan 1-16.

Wednesday evening (May 25th) Midleton U13s played a home game against Ballygarvan. This was the third game of the league for the young Magpies and prior to this game Midleton had been unbeaten. Ballygarvan started the game very strongly. They had registered 1-03 before we got going. Our first score on the board was a Rory Hartnett point. Darragh McCarthy (3) and  James Condon (1) completed our scores for the first half. At half time the score was: Midleton 0-05  Ballygarvan 1-07.

Ballygarvan came out strongly again in the second half and increased their lead. But Midleton were never to give up and came right back into the game. Two goals from Rory Hartnett, a goal Ronan Gees followed by another point from Darragh McCarthy brought us to within 4 points; Midleton dominated the last ten minutes of this game. Darragh McCarthy fired over a point this was followed by another point from Ronan Gees. All of a sudden this was only a 2 point game. A couple of Midleton frees could have levelled it up but they ended up just going the wrong side of the post. The game finished with Ballygarvan winning by 2 points. Midleton played well on the night and will have taken a lot of positives from this game; particularly their spirit when it looked like the match was slipping away from them.

Midleton Panel: B Saunderson, J O’Sullivan, F Greenwood, E McCarthy, L. McGrath, D Codd, N Corcoran, C Smyth, C Murray, K Barry, J Condon (0-01), K Rollins, B. O’Neill, R Hartnett (2-01), E Kelly, S. Bohan, N Fitzgerald, D McCarthy (0-05), C Collins, R Gees (1-01).

Fe13 Hurling Premier 1

Midleton 0-14 Douglas 1-06

Sunday morning (29th May) Midleton played their 4th game of the P1 Hurling league. It was a perfect morning for hurling and a great opportunity for the P1 side to get back on their winning ways. Douglas have been one of the harder teams for us to overcome as this group of young fellas have progressed through their age groups. So it was another one of those games that we could measure how the panel has developed so far this year.

Both defences were on top for the first half and as a result scores were very hard to come by. The second half was far more free flowing. Midleton forwards started to pick off some nice points particularly Alex Quirke (from play and placed balls), Darragh McCarthy, Cian Murray, Ronan Gees and Kelvin Barry. They were ably assisted by outstanding performances in the back line from James O’Sullivan and Fenton Greenwood. Midleton held on to beat a fancied  Douglas side on a score line of 0-14 to 1-06.

Midleton Panel: B Saunderson, J O’Sullivan, F Greenwood, E McCarthy, L. McGrath, D Codd (0-01), N Corcoran, C Smyth, A Quirke (8), C Murray, K Barry, J Condon (0-01), K Rollins, R Hartnett, E Kelly, S. Bohan, N Fitzgerald, D McCarthy (0-03), C Collins, R Gees (0-01).

Fe 13 Hurling C3

Midleton 4-15 Douglas 0-03

On the June Bank Holiday Monday evening our C3 side played their second game of their campaign V Douglas at the Douglas GAA grounds. Trying to get a second panel together is always a difficult task but while it was a bit tight we were, without any great hardship, able to put a panel of 16 together for this trip. The game itself turned out to be a facile win but it is always a great relief for the mentors when they can play some players for a full match that on other occasions might not get a lot of game time. James Condon registered our first two points of the game. Ben O’Neill and Rory Hartnett added the next two before points James got his next brace of points. As the first half came to a close Kelvin Barry picked off a point after a short solo run. Then Mickey Finn came flying into the game with a point and a great goal where he caught the ball out of the air and rifled the ball to the Douglas net. At half time the score was Midleton 1-08 Douglas 0-02.

Midleton picked up at the start of the second half where they had finished the first half, a long range point from Shay Bohan was followed with our second  goal from  a very influential Evan Kelly. A Mickey Finn point was followed by a goal from Kane Rowlands and then a second goal on the evening for Mickey Finn. Midleton finished on a high with a range of fine points from Mickey Finn, Neil Fitzgerald, Evan Kelly, Shay Bohan and finally James Condon. The final score was Midleton 4-15 Douglas 0-03.

Midleton Panel: B Saunderson, N Fitzgerald (0-01), P Magan, L. McGrath, N Corcoran, E Kelly, S Bohan (0-01), K Barry (0-02), J Condon (0-04), K Rollins (0-01), J Condon (0-05), B O’Neill (0-01), M Finn (2-02), R Hartnett (0-01), C Beausang, J Spellman.

Fe13 Football Premier 1

Midleton 5-03 Nemo Rangers 3-10.

Sunday June 12th : The U13 footballing Magpies travelled to Trabeg to take on their counterparts from Nemo Rangers. We had a panel of 18 on the morning. Nemo started strongly and had three points on the board before our boys got into their stride. But when Evan Kelly kicked over a neat point for us it launched the start of a purple patch. Niall Corcoran started a move at midfield that included Darragh Codd, Shay Bohan and Liam McGrath which finally ended up with Kane Rowlands finishing the ball to the Nemo net. Then Cian Murray and Darragh McCarthy added two points. The final play of the half was a pass from Ben O’Neill that found Cian Murray in front of goal’s and he finished the ball to the Nemo net with some aplomb.  At half time Midleton were fully deserving of their 1 goal lead (2-03 0-06). James O’Sullivan, Darragh Codd, Ciarmhac Smyth that played superbly at times in the back line.

Nemo dominated the first ten minutes of the second half and some great saves from Brion Saunderson prevented us from falling too far behind. But entering the last 15 minutes Midleton found themselves 10 points down. But as we have come to expect with this  Midleton panel they picked themselves up and nearly completed a Houdini like escape. Two goals the first one from Phelim Magan and the second from John Spellman had the margin down to 4 points. Midleton then hit the crossbar in two different attacks. Another attack saw Ben O’Neill finish a low shot to the net and there was only one point between the teams. But try as they might for the last two minutes the young footballing Magpies could not level the game up. The game finished with a one point Nemo win: Midleton 5-03 Nemo Rangers 3-10. This was a brilliant game of football and all of the Midleton Panel who were there on the day deserve a good clap on the back. They never gave up and almost pulled off an unexpected victory. This panel have played five games in the Premier 1 football league, winning three and losing two. Both loses have been by 1 point. So boys keep up the great work and your game will come.

Midleton Panel: B Saunderson, J O’Sullivan, E McCarthy, A Fay, L. McGrath, N Corcoran, D Codd, S Bohan, C Smyth, C Murray (0-01), D McCarthy  (0-01), K Rollins (2-00), N Fitzgerald, B. O’Neill (1-00), E Kelly (0-01), S. Bohan (0-02), P Magan, J Condon, J Spellman.
