Midleton Hurling & Football Notes

100th Anniversary
Last Saturday the 15th of November marked the 100th anniversary of our first County Senior Hurling title.
Midleton defeated Cloughdubh in the first round and won by 4-02 v 2-01, they then defeated St Mary’s by 5-01 v 4-01 and in the semi final defeated Collegians by 4-02 v 2-05 to reach the final for the second successive year.Their opponents were Blackrock who had defeated them narrowly the previous year. The final was fixed for the 15th of November with Mallow as the venue. Unfortunately for some reason Blackrock failed to show up and though the referee waited for a considerable length of time, he finally had no option but to award the Match and Championship to Midleton, all in all a most unsatisfactory conclusion.
The following players represented Midleton over the course of these games;
G O’Shea (Captain), Jack Grandon, Dan Twomey, William Twomey, Jim O’Connell, Tom Deasy, Pats Cahill, Dick Gorman, Jimmy Ramsell, William O’Donovan, Pat O’Leary, Jerimiah Egan, Bertie Walsh, John Horgan, William Williams, David O’Keeffe, T O’Connell, P Kirby, W Ahern & P Cody.

Sale of Midleton Town
The 11th of December 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the announcement of the sale of last remnants of the Brodrick Estate in Midleton. In 1964 Lord Midleton, who had previously sold the land to Midleton GAA club, sold the remainder of his assets, incorporating some 300 properties/lease holdings in and around the greater town area, to a private consortium. This caused huge consternation in the locality leading to a civil dispute similar to the water charges dispute now ongoing. Following the announcement of the sale, the people of Midleton resisted efforts by the new ‘owners’ of the town to increase the cost of rents and leases on their properties and the dispute gained national headlines over the following two years. The disagreement saw local people defy ‘as one’ the attempts of the new owners to extract more money from them. Thereafter followed public meetings, marches, IRA intervention, attacks on people and property, changes in Legislation and finally negotiations involving all the parties before an eventual settlement of the dispute materialised almost two years later.

To mark the occasion John Fenton will give a talk on the topic in Midleton GAA club at 8pm on Thursday 11thDecember outlining the background of the dispute and detailing how the agreement involving all parties was concluded.  A donation of €5 per person on the night on behalf of the Irish Kidney Association will be taken up.
A special commemorative limited edition of ‘THE SALE of MIDLETON 1964-1966’  will also be available on the night @ €10.Come early, limited seating.

Fe14
Midleton Fe 14 Footballers have qualified for the Premier 2 County Football League Final against Carbery Rangers, following an exciting and energy sapping victory, after extra time, over Bandon on Monday night last. The game finished Midleton 7-09 Bandon 5-11, after an eventful and physical 80 mins of football, played on wet and heavy ground conditions. We opened brightly and raced into an early lead, scoring goals at will and holding a strong command of affairs in the middle third of the field. We led at half-time 4-01 to 1-01. The expected Bandon reaction materialised at the commencement of the 2nd half, and the hosts came thundering back into the game looking for the scores they needed to claw back the arrears. A number of key injuries to Midleton players aided Bandon greatly, and following 30 mins of an eventful, entertaining and frustrating 2nd half, the game finished Midleton 5-04 Bandon 4-07 at the long whistle. Extra Time began with Bandon totally on top, racing into an early lead, which meant we were trailing for the 1st time and under pressure in all positions. The score at the end of the 1st period of extra-time was Midleton 5-06 Bandon 4-11. A "sucker punch" goal at the start of the 2nd half of extra time meant we now trailed by 5 pts, with time against us. After some re-shuffling and positional switches, our lads put their collective shoulders to the wheel, and once Midleton got the ball into our inside forwards, we had the Bandon backs in all sorts of trouble. We outscored Bandon 1-05 to 1-00 in the 2nd half of extra time, meaning the game finally ended after extra time Midleton 7-09 Bandon 5-11. This result came down to the attributes we expect of this group of players; belief, hard work, character, discipline, fitness & a desire to win. Due to injury & illness, we only had 18 players available on the night, yet all 18 contributed excellently & manfully to a good win.

Team: Jake Shanahan, Alan Power, Sean O Sullivan, Ciaran Evans, Cormac O Brien, Kian Farmer, Cian Murray, Evan Rowlands, Tommy O Connell, Jamie Collins, Craig Barry, Ross O’Regan, Mark Daly, Ryan O Riordan, Ronan Lynch, David Scanlon, Adam O Connell & Conor O’Leary.
Our hurlers are in action next Wednesday v Duhallow in the Premier 1 league semi final in Ballincollig @ 8pm.

Fe15
Our footballers were defeated in the Rebel Og Premier 2 Championship last Saturday by St Nicks in the Glen field by 2-10 v 2-08.
