Midleton Hurling & Football Notes

Senior Hurling Championship
Our Championship game v Douglas takes place next Sunday 31st of August in Pairc Ui Rinn @ 4.15pm. We wish the players and management the very best of luck.

Junior B Hurling
We were defeated by the smallest of margins in the replay of the East Cork Championship second round by Erins Own last Wednesday evening in Castlemartyr.
Having not performed to our potential in the first half we went in at halftime only four points down. In the second half our lads put in a huge effort and were rewarded by taking the lead with only minutes to go only for Erins Own to reply with very late scores to win by a single point.
Final Score Midleton 1-17 v Erins Own 2-15
Team: Coran Swayne, Patrick Stack, Sean Corcoran, Jack Enright, Brendan Ferriter, Cillian Hurley, Joe Collins, Mark O’ Keeffe, Kevin Rohan, Robert Williams, Niall Walsh, Paul Barry, Andrew Rea, Keith Ryan & David O’ Brien.
We have two League games v Cobh and Castlelyons left to play and also the Junior C Championship semi final v Bride Rovers at a future date to be confirmed.

Juvenile Notes

Fe6
Our U6 group travelled to a sunny Youghal GAA club last Saturday the 23rd of August . There were 5 participating clubs including the hosts Youghal, Watergrasshill, Killeagh, Kiltha Og and Midleton. We had 35 boys in attendance and this was broken into 5 teams. Each team played 2 games of 20 minute duration. Our thanks to Youghal for hosting this "fun blitz" and providing refreshments afterwards. Thanks to Sean Crowley GDA for his attendance and ensuring the smooth running of the morning. A special thanks to the parents and families for their support on the day and having all the boys togged out in the black and white.
Finally a thank you to Richie Cunningham and John Grace,  Youghal members of the victorious Cork intermediate All Ireland Hurling team who brought the cup and stood in for photographs.

Fe12
Our Fe12 Premier 1 Hurler’s were in action in Cobh for the annual Johnny Leahy Hurling blitz last Saturday. On a lovely day for hurling we had 19 players available and every player gave their all. Four teams Cobh, Midleton, Douglas and Blackrock to play each other in the group, top two to meet in the Final. After three long hard games we topped the group winning all three games in the process. Douglas who narrowly beat Cobh to be our opponents in the Final.
Ball in game on and from the start Douglas had us under severe pressure, rattling off three well taken points and missing another two before we knew what happened. Gradually we started to move the ball around and after a great solo run from midfielder Ryan Cahill he flashed home a brilliant goal to the Douglas net, Alex Quirke with a few long range frees and all of a sudden we were two to the good. Both  sets of backs were doing some fantastic hooking and blocking a joy to see, and a few goal mouth skirmishes on both sides were cleared with great cheers from both sets of supporters. We swopped points Luke Deane with a great point off his left and Douglas with a well taken free from well out the field had us two in front at the break.
Second half on and away we go again the backs again with some brilliant team work, delivering great low ball to our forwards but you could see Douglas were in determined mood, ball after ball in only to see it come out just as quick, again we exchanged points Douglas with 2 from frees and Paul Connaughton with one leaving the minimum between the teams, as the saying goes “goals win games” unfortunately for us it was Douglas who got that all important goal ,shot at goal parried only for their corner forward to be on hand to rifle home what would be the winning score. Again we swopped points Darragh Crowley with one for us and another free from Douglas. Try as we did for the last five minutes and by God did we try, we couldn’t break down a very well balanced Douglas team.
Again we had some great performances from the likes of Jack Fitzgerald, Patrick Kane, Ryan Cahill, Paul Connaughton, Leo Hennessy and Alex Quirke well done lads. A very high standard of hurling again was witnessed throughout the day by all spectators present and great credit has to go to all the players that took part in this well organised blitz. Again thanks to our neighbours Cobh for the invitation and the hospitality shown to all Parents and Players throughout the day.
Panel: Alex Quirke, Brion Sanderson, Aaron Coughlan, Bradley Savage, Charlie Walsh, Cian Keohane, Conor Fitzgerald, Conor Hayes, Christopher Leahy, Ryan Cahill, Darragh Crowley, Daithi Magan, Gavin Reddy, Jack Fitzgerald, Leo Hennessy, Luke Deane, Liam Kelly, Patrick Kane and Paul Connaughton.

Fe 14
Over the last week our hurlers had two home victories in the Premier 1 League against Shandrum 5-17 to 0-5 and against Bishopstown 3-14 to 0-3. We were on top right throughout both games and it was great to see our full panel used. Next up, we play St Finbarrs at home on tomorrow Monday at St Colman's Community College grounds at 19.00 hrs for our final home game in the Hurling League.
We still have away games to schedule versus Na Piarsaigh and Mallow.
