Juvenile Notes

Fe 11
We travelled to St Michael’s GFC grounds on Saturday 10th of May to participate in a feeder tournament into the John Kerins Gaelic Football Tournament. Unfortunately conditions were shocking with a gale force wind blowing into the harbour for the duration of the matches.
On the morning twenty two of our players turned out for the blitz.
1st Game V. Glanmire: We had the majority of possession for this game but a number of factors most notably the wind meant our accuracy in front of goals wasn’t great. Glanmire held onto win by a goal at the final whistle.
2nd Game V. Ballincollig: There was a marked improvement in our shooting for the second game. We got a number of excellent scores both from play and placed balls. The backs also contributed handsomely to the fine performance but alas we again came up short this time by only two points.
3rd Game V. St Michaels: After two heart-breaking defeats it would have been very understandable if the players’ heads started to drop. But that’s not what this group do in such circumstances. Instead they dug deep and gave their best performance of the day. After extra time they held on to win by 2 goals.
Massive credit is due to all players, parents and mentors who contributed to the team on the day. Undoubtedly there are lots more good days in front of this panel of players

Fe 14
On a very wet and windy evening in Carrigtwohill on Friday last 9th May, Midleton U14 Hurlers overcame local rivals Sarsfields, in a very tense battle, on a scoreline of 3-6 to 1-5 in this eagerly awaited Quarter Final of the Cork County Premier 1Hurling championship. Sars started strongly and in the first 20 minutes owned the sliotar and bombarded the Midleton rearguard, who were under fierce pressure at this stage. Sars were on top around the middle of the pitch and Midleton were finding it hard to get any clean possession. Our backs held out strongly and Sars were limited to 3 pointed frees to show before Midleton got on the board with a point from play after 16 minutes. Shortly afterwards Sars scored the goal that always looked likely, by virtue of the domination they had. So after 20 minutes the score was Sars 1-3 (well worth it), Midleton 0-1 and the Feile Champions looked in deep trouble. The Midleton players showed great heart and some positional changes were made that benefited all the players. We were now hurling well and the lads upped their game considerably. They began running at Sars. In a purple spell of 10 minutes before half time a haul of 1-4 turned the game on its head. Suddenly Midleton were ahead 1-5 to 1-3 at half time and looking strong. In the second half Midleton continued where they left off in the first half, and began to dominate. Yet scores were hard to come by, due to a resolute Sars defence. Approaching the final 10 minutes, Midleton scored a cracking goal to lead 2-6 to 1-4. Shortly afterward, Midleton raised another Green Flag to leave Sars now needed goals to have any chance of winning. Sars tried to the end and threw everything at our defence, but Midleton held out for a win that looked very unlikely after 20 minutes.
Final Score Midleton 3-06 v Sarsfields 1-05, we now play the winners of Valley Rovers and Bishopstown in the Semi Final on next Saturday in our quest for the Sean Keohane cup. Well done to all our panel of 26 players.
Team: Ross Shanahan, Christian Murphy, Alan Power, Cormac O Brien, Sean O Sullivan, Ciaran Evans, Kian Farmer, Griffin Hurley, Cian Murray, Conor O Leary, Evan Rowlands, Jake Shanahan, Sam Quirke, Ross O Regan, Tommy O Connell, Fergus Wade, David Scanlon, Ryan O Riordan, Mark Daly, Niall Higgins, Coleman Quinn, Craig Barry, Gary Carroll, Ronan Lynch, Adam O Connell, Cian Crowley.

Best of Luck to our club players on the Midleton CBS Rice Cup hurling team who take on Ard Scoil Ris of Limerick in the final in Charleville next Thursday @ 1.30

Fe16
Our Fe16 Hurlers completed their League program ahead of the break for the Junior Cert Exams with a defeat at home to neighbours Carrigtwohill. In a performance that mirrored that of previous games the boys were unable to match a strong performance in the 1st half in the second but unlike previous games we couldn't hold out and faded to lose by 2 pts in the end. We now break until after the Exams and we wish all the boys on the panel who sit the exams the very best of luck in their tests ahead.
