Midleton Hurling & Football Notes

Last Man Standing
This year’s competition kindly sponsored by GARDE ENGINEERING based on the Premiership took place again last weekend, most punters selected Liverpool and as a result there were more fallers here than at Aintree ! It now appears that approx. 20 will progress again to next weekend, further information are available on the club website www.midletongaa.com on the top right hand corner of the Homepage.

Senior Hurling
Our Senior Hurlers had two very good victories in the RedFM League recently, on the Bank Holiday Monday they defeated Ballinhassig away by 1-11 v 1-09 and on Sunday evening last in heavy conditions they defeated Bride Rovers at home by 2-13 v 2-01. Team v Bride Rovers: Christopher Dunlea, Declan Ryan, Alwyn Kearney, Elliot Mulcahy, Eoin Walsh, Patrick O Mahony, Seamus O Farrell, Leslie Coughlan, Peter Dowling, Padraig O Keeffe, Padraig O Shea, Paul Haughney, Ian Kennefick, Kieran Mulcahy & Patrick White. Subs used Oisin Cotter & Neil O Regan.

U21 Football
Following on from our semi final victory over Glanmire our footballers met Erin’s Own in the East Cork Final in Riverstown last Saturday. Despite a great effort we went down on a score line of 1.04 v 3.05. Our chances were hampered from the start having to field without the injured Killan Burke and Stephen Moore who’s now abroad and to add to our woes Niall Madden went off injured very early in the game.
We wish Erins Own well in the County quarter final v Valley Rovers.
Team: Josh Deady, Brian O Sullivan, Niall O Regan, Gavin Bagnell, Darren Quirke, Leslie Coughlan, Padraig O Farrell, Patrice Tschmanga, Patrick O Mahony (capt), Niall Madden, Ian Kennefick, Elliot Mulcahy, Patrick White, Shane Harrington & Kelvin Kruschel. Subs Michael Abernethy, Andrew Rea, Byran Rossiter, Alan Stanton, Ola Bello, & Billy O Shea.

Minor Hurling
Last Sunday evening in Killeagh our Minor hurlers got their Premier 1 Rebel Og Minor Hurling League off to a good start with a hard fought victory in trying conditions over Killeagh/Ita’s. Final Score Killeagh/Ita’s 1.03 v Midleton 1.11.
Their championship game against Mallow is presently fixed for April 24th.
Team: Byran Rossiter, Alan Stanton, Gavin Bagnell, Cormac Beausang, Billy O Shea, Seanaidh Smyth, Luke Dineen, Sean O Farrell, Killian Deady, Patrice Tschmanga, Padraic Nagle, Josh Deady, Robert Williams, Ciaran Maloney & Michael Abernethy. Subs Kalem Deady, Oisin Lynch, Lochlinn Mc Carthy, Brian O Mahony, Shane Buckley and Padraig O Brien.

Juvenile Notes

Fe 13
Midleton U13 Footballers had a comprehensive home win against Sliabh Rua on Wednesday 3rd of April at the Tech Field on a scoreline of 7-11 to 2-1. This was "one way traffic" from the start and playing with the stiff breeze in the first half, we lead 5-8 to no score. We now have maximum points from our first two football league games. It was also encouraging that we had a panel of 23 players for this game. All players acquitted themselves well on the night.

Midleton U13 Hurlers won this second round game V St Finbarr's on Sunday 7th April on a windswept, wet and miserable afternoon in Togher on a scoreline of 2-5 to no score. We now have won two Hurling League Games from two. Team: Niall Higgins, David Scanlon, Alan Power, Christian Murphy, Fergus Wade, Ciaran Evans, Mark Daly, Evan Rowlands, Ross O Regan, Ronan Lynch, Cian Murray, Jake Shanahan, Coleman Quinn, Cormac O Brien, Sam Quirke, Ryan O Riordan & Cormac Hill. The team gave a great display of strength and determination with a disciplined display.

Fe 12
Midletons Fe 12 hurlers welcomed Na Pairsaigh to the CBS field on Saturday 6th for the opening game of the Rebel Óg league.
11 aside was the order of the day and both clubs brought enough for two games.
From early on it looked like it was to be Midleton's day and so it turned out. Na Pairsaigh put it up to our lads but it was the Midleton players who were the more accurate when in front of goal.
We showed great strength from the backs right up the field and what really impressed was how the lads worked for each other to get this win.
Many thanks to Na Pairsaigh players and selectors for travelling and making a great game of it. Well done also to the players of the Fe 12 squad and thanks to the Fe 11 players who helped out on the day.

Fe 11
Our Fe11 footballers travelled to Ballincollig today on what was a beautiful day
for Football .In all we had twenty four players who travelled so we had two games
of 11 a side with one rotating player coming in every few min’s for both sides. In both games we were very slow to start and Ballincollig punished us with some great scores. But as is always the case with these lads the tougher the game the better they get. After gifting a goal early team A roared back into this game and with some great passing and with a small bit of composure and self belief in front of goal this game could have been over before the short whistle. Team B on the other hand didn’t seem to recover from their bad start and went in at half time down a few goals. Whatever was said to these lads at half time seemed to hurt and they came out in the second half a different side some fantastic football up front from Daniel O’Donovan 1-3pt and in defence by Daniel Cagney and Jack Fitzgerald set us up for a great second half. We got some great scores and what’s more important to us we fought for every ball but in the end Ballincollig weathered the storm and held out for the win. Team A on the other hand were in the driving seat at half time. Paul Conaughton and Darragh Crowley were dominating midfield and getting some brilliant scores while Alex Quirke, Patrick Kane and Trevor Shine in the backs attacked every ball from the front and we were looked good. On with the second half and away we went tagging on a point to the 2-5 we had to leave the game 2-6 to 1-3 then in the blink of an eye Ballincollig hit us with a bombshell. Three goals in a five minute spell knocked us for six but again we rose to the challenge Patrick Kane up and down the one wing and Conor Fitzgerald doing the same down the other but Ballincollig to their credit fought for everything and stemmed the tide to run out winners on a scoreline of 5-6 to 3-10.
Thanks again to Ballincollig.
Remember it’s not what you do at training that will improve you it’s what you do at home that counts.
Reminder to all Parents, Please text if your son is unable to attend matches. Thanks

Gum Shields
From the 1st of January 2013 it is now compulsory for juvenile players to wear gum shields (mouth Guards). The rule relates to both football training and matches. This ruling has come from GAA Headquarters and anybody not wearing a gum shield and who subsequently gets injured during a match or training session will not be covered by GAA insurance.
GAA recommended gum Shields can be purchased from our juvenile club sponsor Murphy’s Pharmacy in Midleton.
Please ensure that your child has a gum shield for every training session and game.

Training
Most teams are back training now following the Christmas break. Training times can be found on the club website www.midletongaa.com   . On the juvenile team page for your child’s team training times have been posted. We would ask parents to encourage their children to practice during the week even if the weather is bad, parents can practice catching the ball indoors. For players from junior infants to Fe 9 please remember to bring your €2 to training sessions. This money is vital to keep the juvenile section of the club funded.
