Junior B Hurling Championship
Midleton 2-15  Carrignavar 2-10
Our Junior B hurlers qualified for the East Cork final when they overcame a strong challenge from Carrignavar. The game was played on last Saturday afternoon at Watergrasshill in ideal conditions which contributed to a fine open game of hurling. Midleton had the better of the early exchanges and  we scored two goals in the opening fifteen minutes. Carrignavar responded with a goal of their own and at the quarter stage we led 2-04 to 1-02. We continued to have the better of the exchanges for the remainder of the first half and added some fine points from Philip O’Neill , Ian Fitzpatrick and Darren Quirke. At half time we enjoyed a nine point lead 2-10 to 1-04. We turned to face the wind in the second half and made a good solid start. Carrignavar had more of the play but our defence was solid throughout. With ten minutes to go we led by 2-15 to 1-08. In the last ten miutes Carrignavar threw the proverbial kitchen at us and managed to reduce the deficit to five points by the end.
Overall it was a good performance and the mentors will be happy ot have reached the final. The final will be against Sarsfields who had a very impressive win over Dungourney by 21 points, which leaves us in doubt as to the challenge ahead.
Manager Gavin Power and his selectors Michael Tobin and Ger Lawton will leave no stone unturned in their preparation and a great final is in prospect.
Team: Christy Dunlea, Billy O’Shea, Pat Fox, Eoin Ferriter, Neil O’Regan, Alwyn Kearney, Jerome Curtin, Darren Quirke, Sean O’Farrell, Aengus Cotter, Philip O’Neill, Brian O’Sullivan, Ian Fitzpatrick,  Keith Ryan, Gavin Hurley.

Junior C Hurling Final
All roads lead to Killeagh this coming Friday evening, 26th , for the East Cork Junior C Hurling final between Midleton and neighbours Dungourney for the Michael Foley Cup. The game goes ahead under lights with a 7.30pm throw in. Midleton are the reigning champions and have overcome Lisgoold and Bride Rovers to earn their place in the final.
As one would expect the Midleton team is a blend of youth and experience with probably more emphasis on the youth side of it. Youngsters like Coran Swayne, Joe Collins , Liam Walsh and John Shanahan  have lots of experience around them in defence from the likes of Barry Fitzgerald, Colm Leahy and last years captain Brendan Ferriter. Keelin Kennedy, Alan Stanton, Andy Rea and Dara O’Keefe provide the youthful input in midfield and attack alongside captain Gearoid Fitzgerald, Stephen O’Brien and veteran Muiris Quirke. Brian Fitzgerald, Paul O’Brien, Brian Rossiter and Shane Goulding ensure that picking the team for the final will not be straight forward. You also have Coleman Quirke who scored a goal when introduced in the semi final.
Midleton have lost Philip O’Neill to the Junior B team since the semi final but with all sorts of rumours of former greats dusting off the boots one should not be surprised at who you could see in the Midleton dug out on Friday evening. We wish Gavin Power, his fellow mentors and all the squad the best of luck on Friday evening. Please come along along and lend your support as it would be much appreciated.

Legends Walk
Vice Chairman Kevin Hennessy has organised a fundraising walk which will take place on bank Holiday Monday October 29th October from Kent Station in Cork to Midleton train station. A donation from the proceeds will be made to Midleton Hospital. He will be joined by fellow Midleton GAA legends John Fenton, Pat Hartnett, Denis Mulcahy and Ger Fitzgerald. Sponsorship cards are widely available. You are more than welcome to join in for all or part of the route. Any sponsorship would be much appreciated.

Co. Board Draw
The County Board Draw was a good fundraiser for the Club in the past year. It has been decided to put a focus on it again for the coming year in an effort to further boost the numbers participating. A ticket for the 12 monthly draws costs €100 and this enters you into a draw every month with excellent prizes on offer every month such as a car or larger cash amounts. From the Clubs perspective €45 out of every €100 goes directly to the Club. You can buy a ticket  directly online or through Midleton GAA Club. If you wish to buy please contact either John Fenton, Vin Reddy, Pearse McCarthy or Steve Sheehan. Further details are available on the Midleton GAA or Cork County Board websites.

You Tube
A number of Midleton GAA related videos have been uploaded to You Tube. The 1988 All Ireland Club Final obviously features promimently but also of great interest is a video of the team on the team bus before leaving for Dublin, as well as interviews with supporters at Midleton train station and also on the train en route to Dublin. It is great to see lots of familiar faces from the past and is well worth a look . The video with the interviews is titled ‘’Midleton V Athenry all Ireland final 1988 (Before The Match)’’. Enjoy.

Juvenile Notes

James O’Brien and Davey Hogan Blitz’s
The annual James O’Brien and Davey Hogan Blitz’s took place on Saturday 20th in Midleton GAA Club. Taking part were Fe 12 teams from Blackrock, Cobh Douglas and Midleton.
Each club brought sufficient players to play a team in each competition with teams being split evenly and no swapping of players (the only exception was with Blackrock where due to short numbers a number of Midleton Fe 11 players helped out ( no names)).
The day brought some wonderful individual and team performances to our ground and in the end Douglas were worthy winners of both Cups. Well done to Douglas for their win and to the others for making it a day to remember.
Along with Jim O’Brien and Colm Hogan who represented the families of the Blitz sponsors, Conor Lehane came along to present the cups and medals to the winners Thank you to all three.
Our thanks (and probably all of the teams) go also to Michael Franklin and Pa Beausang for refereeing the matches.
Last but by no means least, thanks to all who helped to put the day together including the makers of the refreshments afterwards and those who set up the pitches and were around to clean up.

Fe 10
Last Saturday the 20th we held our annual FE10 hurling blitz at Midleton CBS pitch. Four teams took part Dungarvan, Blackrock, Douglas and Midleton. Each team had enough players for two 11 aside matches so we made out four pitches resulting in no team having to wait around between games. What a sight at the CBS pitch where over a hundred FE10 hurlers displayed all the skills of the game for nearly two hours. At the end of the blitz all players, mentors and families came back to the clubhouse for refreshments. A big thanks to everyone who helped out on the day. Our thanks also to the Midleton CBS for the use of the pitch throughout the year which was in pristine condition and to the FE10 parents for supplying the food on the day and helping with the clean up at the clubhouse at the end of a long but very enjoyable day. Saturday training is now finished. Training every Thursday at Midleton hockey pitch from 6 to 7.

Juvenile Registration Day
For those who missed the registration day you can talk to your childs team mentors who will have registration forms. Their details are on the club website under their individual teams.

Training
With the nights closing in and the main pitch closing for the winter team training venues and times will be changing. Keep an eye on the club website www.midletongaa.com on the juvenile team page for your child’s team training times. Team managers will update teams by text when changes are due. We would ask parents to encourage their children to practice during the week even if the weather is bad, parents can practice catching the ball indoors. For players from junior infants to Fe 9 please remember to bring your €2 to training sessions. This money is vital to keep the juvenile section of the club funded.

Club Gear
Midleton GAA juvenile club will have a shop with club playing and leisure wear open each Saturday morning in the clubhouse. With Christmas coming up you can also buy Midleton GAA gift vouchers from the club.
