Midleton GAA News 12th March 2012

12 March, 2012

Opening of Redevelopment
This coming Saturday March 17th will see our redeveloped facilities in use for the first time. Over the last few months our old Squash Courts have been transformed into two new Changing Rooms, a new Meeting Room and a new Gym. The work has been completed on time and will be open for all to see this coming Saturday St. Patricks Day. The Changing Rooms will be in use for our Senior Hurling League game when we host neighbours Carrigtwohill at 12 noon. Please come along and have a look around and take in the game while you are there.

Senior Hurling League
Midleton 1-15  Killeagh 2-12
Our Senior Hurlers played their second game in the Senior Hurling League on Satyrday last when we hosted Killeagh. In ideal conditions for hurling the game was a well contested one. The first half saw very little between the teams. Midleton had a much changed team from the previous weeks game due to injuries and inter county commitments. At half time Midleton led by 0-09 to 0-07 and had finished the stronger. There was a good spreadon the Midleton scores. Sean Hennessy from placed balls, Padraig O’Shea, Kieran Mulchay, Paul Haughney and Padraig O’Keefe all pointed. We started the second half strongly. Paul Haughney set up Sean Hennessy for an excellent goal. We were to dominate for the first twenty minutes and led by six points. Paul Hughney was outstanding during this time with several fine scores from play. Our defence was solid and we were well in control. When Killeagh were reduced to fourteen players it looked like game over. However Killeagh battled away and we conceded two late goals to tie the game up. Overall everyone would have been disappointed to draw a game we looked like winning comfortably but  on the positive side we remain unbeaten and the Mentors have had a chance to look at a good number of different players in just two games. The one thing that is obvious is that competition for places will be fierce this year.

Team: Brian Behan, Alwyn Kearney, Declan Ryan, Killian Burke, Eoin Walsh, James Nagle, Leslie Coughlan, Seamus O’Farrell, Peter Dowling, Sean Hennessy, Padraig O’Shea, Padraig O’Keefe, Paul Haughney, Kieran Mulcahy, Tommy Wallis. Subs Used: Aengus Cotter, Shane Ryan, Joe Loftus.

Junior Football
Midleton 2-09 Glenville 2-06
On Wednesday 7th March Midleton’s Junior Gaelic Football team played Glenville in their fourth match of the East Cork Junior League. The match was played in Glenville in what could at best be described as very challenging underfoot conditions. The home team started the better and were first to score and held a lead the whole way to the half time break. The last ten minutes of the first half saw a change of attitude from the Midleton players and so they only went in two points down. The Midleton footballers were able to carry the momentum from the end of the first half into the second and so it wasn’t long before they found themselves in the lead. A lead they didn’t relinquish for the remainder of the game. The final score was Midleton 2-9, Glenville 2-6. A nice head-of-steam is building up behind this team and it’s going to be interesting to see how the season progresses. Midleton Team: O’Keeffe, B. Ferriter, Fitzgerald, Collins, O’Donnell, Dowling, Ryan 1-4, E. Ferriter, Coughlan 2 pts, Hennessey, Ola Bella 1pt, W. O’Brien 1-2, Behan, Krushell, Subs used: Dunlea, Curtin, D. O’Brien.

Junior Hurling League
Midleton 1-03 Buttevant 1-11
Our Junior Hurlers opened their campaign in the Avondhu / Imokilly Junior Hurling League on Sunday last when then travelled to Buttevant. It was to be a tough day at the office as we came out the wrong side of a heavy defeat.

Juvenile Notes
Fe-11

Midletons Fe 11 lads took the trip to Killeagh for a football match in the Rebel Óg league. We brought 22 players which meant everybody played a full game. the lads were split into two teams and played two 25 minute halves in each game.
Both teams played well and when you consider how few football games they have played the skill levels were good.
At close of play one team won and the other team lost. This means both Killeagh and ourselves get two points each.
We look forward to welcoming Killeagh for the hurling league later in the year.
Well done to all who played.

Fe-9
Twenty Four of Midleton’s Fe 9 Gaelic Footballers traveled to Rostellan on Saturday 10th of March. Conditions were near perfect for the match-up between Midleton and Aghada. Both sides split their panels into two, so that meant two games running in parallel across the carpet like pitch that is Aghada’s home venue. There was time for two full games for each team. All Midleton’s footballers performed to an exceptionally high standard and that was in a morning of very competitive matches. It was the first football match of the year and their discipline, dedication and whole work ethic has been something that they should be proud of. Finally, I would once again like to thank all of the supporters and team coaches who help with these games.

Easter GAA Camp
For the first time, Midleton GAA juvenile section will be running an Easter GAA Camp.
The camp will take place on the 4th and 5th of April this year. Boys from Junior Infants upwards will be welcome. Further details will be posted in the coming weeks.

Training
Training is back in full swing for Juvenile teams. We would ask parents to encourage their children to practice during the week even if the weather is bad, parents can practice catching the ball indoors. Please remember to bring your €2 to training sessions. This money is vital to keep the juvenile section of the club funded.

Club Gear
Midleton GAA juvenile club will have a shop with club playing and leisure wear open on the first Saturday of each month. This will commence with the indoor training sessions in the Community Centre and then in the Club Pavilion once outdoor training re-commences.

Kellogs 2012 Cúl Camp
The dates are out for this year’s Cúl Camp. The camp will take place from the 2nd to the 6th of July. Boys from Junior Infants up are welcome to attend. Further details will be available nearer the time for registration.

Juvenile Golf Classic
The Midleton Juvenile GAA Golf Classic will take place once again this year. Following on from the great success of last year we hope we will receive strong support again in 2012. The dates have been confirmed as Wednesday 18th and Thursday 19th of July. The competition will once again take place in East Cork Golf Club.
Once again the main sponsor will be Blackwater Motors Cork, Fermoy and Skibereen.
More details of the Classic will follow in the coming weeks.
