Mayfield (4-11) vs Midleton GAA (3-08)

Mayfield, 14:00PM

Mayfield 4-11 Midleton 3-08

Midleton Under 15’s commenced their 2011 season with an opening round loss to Mayfield in the new Premier 2 County Football League. Played in extremely blustery conditions on soft but well presented Mayfield pitch the home team got off to a blistering start which Midleton never managed pull back.

Playing with a very strong wind Mayfield won the throw in and after a clever defence splitting pass and a strong run the Mayfield centre forward had the ball over the Midleton cross bar within 20 seconds. Under pressure on their own kick out it took the Midleton defence some time to get up to the speed of the Mayfield attack who through some hard support running, quick pass work had notched up a further 2 Goals and a point within the next 2 minutes leaving Midleton trailing by 2-2 to no score with only three minutes elapsed on the clock.

To the credit of the Midleton lads they did not crumble and the ensuing 57 minutes was a very entertaining high scoring and balanced game of football. Cillian Deady opened Midleton’s account with a brace of pointed frees supported by Kalem Deady who added a further 2 points in a good solid 15 minute period for Midleton who worked hard into the strong wind. Mayfield reasserted control for a 5 minute purple patch in which the added a third goal and further 3 points. However Midleton showed their fighting spirit when Glen Harty finished doff a great move with a Goal followed by another Cillian Deady point leaving it 3-6 to 1-5 at the break.

In the second half Midleton worked hard to claw back the deficit. Kevin Rohan worked tirelessly winning and carrying ball all day at the middle of the park. Luke Morrissey started to break forward in support of the attack. Rurai Morrison’s battling efforts at full forward were rewarded with two fine goals in the second half but unfortunately the gap stubbornly remained as Mayfield managed to keep the points ticking over at crucial times and got an opportune goal when the Midleton defence momentarily lost concentration. In the end a six point margin separated the teams.
