Midleton Senior hurlers had an excellent vicory over a fancied Sarsfields team in the opening round of the Evening Echo sponsored Cork Senior Hurling Championship. The game was played before a large attendance at Carrigtwohill. Midleton were quickly into their stride and showed the greater hunger throughout. The Magpies led by a point at half time which scarcely reflected their superiority in the first half. The expected Sarsfields rally in the second half did not materialise. The decisive score came when Paul Haughney finished a ground stroke to the back of the net for the games only goal. It was a great victory for Midleton who were very the underdogs with all pundits prior to the game.
